12 Yet American abolitionists of the pre-Revolutionary period had not had to face constitutional barriers to legislative action. Nor did British and French antislavery theory always apply to the United States, where slavery was practiced not in distant colonies, but in states that formed an indissoluble part of the nation and benefited from disproportionate political representation in Congress. In short, to refute the objections that conservative opponents raised to antislavery agitation, Child had to collect facts from a wide variety of sources and synthesize them into a coherent argument addressing all aspects of the slavery controversymoral, legal, economic, political, and racial.

During his stint on the Massachusetts Journal, the youthful journeyman printer had greatly admired the "vigor and dash" of his employer's writing, as well as the "candor, good sense, and sterling independence" David had shown as editor. Garrison may also have tried to proselytize his employer when he began collecting signatures for antislavery petitions in August 1828, after being spurred into antislavery activism by Benjamin Lundy. He would pay tribute to David half a century later as one of "the very earliest of my anti-slavery friends and co-laborers," though by then he could no longer recollect how much contact he and David had had with each other at the Journal office.
